Review of Inherent Vice (2014) by James C — 15 Jan 2015
"Inherent Vice" is the product of a writer, producer and director's brain on drugs. It's one of those movies that leaves you asking yourself, "what the hell did I just see?" It was disjointed and incoherent at times.
There were scenes with no explanation, such as Doc walking out of a building with a briefcase and jumping on the hood of Detective "Bigfoot's" car before being taken to the ground and stomped on, for no apparent reason.
Other things about the movie, left me scratching my head. Doc's untrustworthy sidekick comes running into the Golden Fang building carrying the steering wheel from the car he crashed. My thought was, "is this a play?" I wanted it to be funnier, but it wasn't.
I wanted to see a fantastic cast make the material work, but they didn't. The movie might be spot on to the source, but it's not user friendly to movie goers who are not familiar with Thomas Pynchon.
In the end, "Inherent Vice" left me dazed and confused like a bad trip.
