If you enjoy Paul Thomas Anderson's comedies with an absurdist twist like "Magnolia" and "Punch Drunk Love" then this will be right up your alley. It is not a clear path though, so if you prefer your narratives linear and without hallucinatory fever dreams, then this might not be your fare.
Outstanding performance from Josh Brolin, he steals most fo the scenes that he's in. But Joaquin Phoenix more than acquits himself as the unlikeliest detective in cinema history.
