Review of Inherent Vice (2014) by Indi V — 17 Jan 2015
Ordinarily, when one says "What the hell did I just watch?" after leaving a movie, the movie was either bad or a jumbled mess. This movie isn't bad, but it is very jumbled.
The plot, much like our constantly stoned protagonist, is jumbled, hazy, and by the time you can make sense of it all, you're wondering where you've been for the last half hour. In any other movie, this would spell disaster. However, that's the tone this movie is going for and it succeeds at it. The plot does have a tendency to thicken, and thicken, and thicken some more. This can turn off a few viewers. It's a bit hard to keep track of who's sleeping with who or conspiring with who to pull of what scheme.
Performance-wise, Josh Brolin stands head and shoulders above the rest and gives the film's best performance. He's brash, stone-cold, and takes no nonsense. He's also given quite a few comedic moments that serve to humanize as more than just an abrasive cop. Everyone else is alright, but nobody besides Brolin really stands out.
It's insane, chaotic, a mess, and you will walk out of the film laughing like crazy or wondering if everyone involved in making it was crazy... or stoned.
