Review of Inherent Vice (2014) by Ricardo O — 24 Jan 2015
This is a film that I'm sure in time will develop a cult following, almost the same way as the Coens' Big Lebowski (another comedy whose protagonist works as a private eye) did. Upon first viewing, the plot and much of the dialogue seems almost incoherent and just plain thick or convoluted. Most will go into this with the wrong kind of mindset; you have go into it in a way that you don't try to necessarily dissect the plot, instead it's best you just go along with the ride and watch as an experience. If you just take it all in and just experience it, you as the viewer may appreciate it more. I'm certain the entire plot all makes sense but it would likely take a few viewings to truly understand it all.
With the exception of the ramblings that Joaquin Phoenix's girlfriend goes on a couple times in the movie, this movie is a really fun ride. The comedy in this is pretty damn funny especially the physical comedy and I'm a big fan of film noir and modern noir so I like it more because it's in that realm. All of the actors are excellent especially Joaquin Phoenix and Josh Brolin. The scenes they have together are brilliant. Definitely looking forward to watching it again in the future.
