Review of Inherent Vice (2014) by Alasdair B — 04 Feb 2015
Whilst Inherent Vice is an undeniably challenging film for serious audiences, it's the refreshing sense of humour and strong performances that bring it to life... well that and the copious amount of marijuana that appears to have been used to tint every roll of 35mm film. This provides us with a luscious palette of yellow and oranges, a picturesque California, a paranoid California obsessed with cults and conspiracy theories.
Luckily, due to an absurdly complicated premise and an ensemble cast of talented individuals, we are presented with a colourful film that holds us in it's grasp and forces us to leave our expectations at the door.
Highlights of the film include Doc's and Bigfoot's rather dysfunctional relationship and the breakout star Katherine Waterston who steals the scene on every occasion. This kids... is how it's done.
