Review of Inherent Vice (2014) by Manon M — 08 Mar 2015
Honestly, this movie is hilariously psychedelic and aggressively weird, with one intriguing character after another. Many chuckles included. Joaquin Phoenix and Josh Brolin are good fun to watch (they had great chemistry!). References to Tarantino and some Kubrick-like absurdity. I think the drug confusion could have been expressed better tho.
It's quite an extraordinary film - you'll have to enjoy it for the cool images and hilarious episodes and funny lines, and let go of the need to hold the whole thing in your head (it is impossible, believe me), or you won't enjoy it at all. It's very long but never boring thanks to its dynamics. There are scenes that will leave you with so much laughter and you will be embarrassed how much you are enjoying this movie (yep, guilty pleasure...). Wondering which plot devices are imagined and which are real is perhaps the best part of this story.
I highly recommend this movie, but like I said, it's really weird...really. You have to enjoy that kind of thing. The film is not for everyone. Not for a lot of people, actually. I had a great time. Epic. Surreal. I so wanna watch this enjoyable confusion again.
