Review of Inherent Vice (2014) by Bill S — 19 Mar 2015
This is a long movie that's huge on style--everything about it looks early 70s--the photography, the look, feel and the sleazy gurus peddling nirvana. It was the Nixon era; creepy and rotten and stoned.
Brolin and Phoenix nail it and Witherspoon comes off just right as an assistant no-nonsense DA, an easy role to overplay and Reese nails it. The story is very Pynchon and is difficult at times to piece together.
