Review of Inherent Vice (2014) by David H — 09 Dec 2015
After seeing Paul Thomas Anderson's latest film I still can't really tell you what it's about...and I don't think its main character Doc could either. The film's atmosphere is the smoky haze of the 70's and we follow a character who is constantly stoned.
PTA knows how to make a film and one with a specific vision, beating on his own drum this film definitely isn't for everyone. I'm a massive fan of his and even I can say this really isn't for me.
Don't get me wrong it's a good movie and very well made. Fantastic performances from the whole cast with Joaquin Phoenix knocking it out of the park and Josh Brolin being an absolute blast. The score and soundtrack are enjoyable and Robert Elswit's cinematography is great though not as cinematic as their pervious collaborations.
In terms of narrative the film is both dense and all over the place, being very confusing. But I don't think the plot is really the point of the film, it just captures the essence of the time and quite well.
It can be funny, thrilling and engaging but also hard to get a grasp of.
