Review of Inglourious Basterds (2009) by Dann M — 09 Jul 2013
Writer/director Quentin Tarantino tries his hand at a historical epic in the World War II film Inglourious Basterds. The film follows two parallel stories, one of an American Special Forces unit that carries out covert attacks, the other of a French Resistance theatre owner, as they converge in an attempt to assassinate the Nazi high command at a film premiere.
Featuring an all-star cast that includes Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Melanie Laurent, Michael Fassbender, Eli Roth and Diane Kruger, the performances are exceptionally good. However, Tarantino's flare for dialog has trouble translating, and gets bogged down in minutia.
The film also has some pacing issues, and the storytelling's a bit weak. Inglourious Basterds is entertaining and Tarantino delivers some brilliant sequences, but the film as a whole is uneven and lacks focus.
