Review of Inglourious Basterds (2009) by David S — 06 May 2015
Inglourious Basterds was a return of Tarantino's talent to the screen and brought him back from his Grindhouse slump, and his below standard Kill Bills. This fantastical take of the Nazi empire, it's potential demise and the combatants within is a beautiful combination of story telling and artistry.
Tarantino has whipped out his brush, and painted as he would, with complete disregard to history, cliches, predictability, and taboos and limitations. Nearly every scene is masterfully created, packing an incredible weight of emotions, ranging from suspense, excitement, confusion to amazement and joy.
Splicing serious and moody scenes with undertones of humour and vice versa, Tarantino makes it difficult for the viewer to decide when to laugh, when to cry, and which to do for which reason. Filled to the brim with irony, shock and surprise, Inglourious Basterds is a perfect example of not only Tarantino's genius, but of modern cinematic genius, and of what can be achieved when stories are pushed beyond limits.
