Review of Inglourious Basterds (2009) by Dusty L — 12 Apr 2015
I'll probably be hated but fuck it....This movie is ok not bad but not amazingly good as so many other are complimenting this film to be. Is it because I don't understand whats going on nor like Taratino's style No that's BS cause I enjoy all of his other works. This film I feel is the hypnotizing effect that people are so delusional to think that something that is ok is the greatest film of the year. Let me explain why.
This film is marketed to the audience of focusing on the "Bastards" a rogue US military squad (that are Jews apparently cause no one else hates the Nazis) that kills well Germans in an alternate WW2 timeline. I say alternate because spoiler at the end of the film the Bastards kill everyone of the third reich command. Unfortunately there is a huge middle that everyone even critics fail to realize. 30 min of the film focuses on the Bastards "killing" people (and by killing I mean 1 shootout and the rest of people scalping germans and laughing at how brutal they are) The rest focuses on some French Jewish chick who runs a movie theater that nobody cares about (yet audience does cause we need a female that'll kill people). If the film doesn't focus on the bastards why have them in the movie, marketed. Instead this film should've been called the tedious sabotage tale that would never ever happen.
Film takes place in France when a more suitable place should've been Germany. Tarantino stated that his movie isn't supposed to be historically accurate ... ok then... But...IT CAN STILL BE LOGICAL. Germany would never film a War propaganda film in Paris (Nazi Germany wanted their nation to be the artistic cinema culture hub of Europe), the entire 3rd reich would never see a propaganda film in Paris, and Adolf Hitler wouldn't have gone anyways. I Paris a lot because LOGIC needs to be here SPOILER later on in the film Waltz negotiates with Brad Pitt in allowing their theater bomb assassination plot to kill Hitler & Reich to continue if Waltz is dropped of his war crimes, becomes a war hero for the allies, and lives in a nice home in the US. Allie command agrees to the terms and they drive to Allied territory. Where is the allied territory? NORMANDY (Northern France), HItler has gone to see a movie in Paris while his enemies are at his doorstep.??!?!?!?!??!?!? Still think the movie is amazing critics.
I am very well aware of his Spaghetti Western Style but all of his other films have great: action, characters, soundtrack, adventure (of going from place to place not jumping ahead like this film), suspense, and most importantly realism. Everything his other films have Bastards has a strong lack of. The characters are just there to "kill" no horrors of war no trauma no motivations for betraying their country to do rogue things just kill kill kill even Nazi motivation Waltz states "we don't know why we hate the jews they're just there to be killed cause thats the natural order of things" (Not exactly what he says but close enough) What a fucking joke. pacing of the film is aweful yes Spaghetti Westerns are long movies but they have adventure interesting characters and a great soundtrack to keep you engaged this one doesn't cause jump to a French theater girl.
It sounds like I'm bashing this film But I'm not. Im trying to express my opinion on the film and get people even film critics, who have years of experience, to realize that this film isn't as great as people claim.
The film is ok. As it has the good concept and everything from cinematography, soundtrack, action, acting, and soundtrack are just ok: nothing special. Pacing & adventure are the biggest problems as there is a lack of focus on the Bastards who are the much more interesting characters that jumps to them in a new location without much setup (Just poof I'm here). Anyways 6/10.
