Review of Inglourious Basterds (2009) by Nuril B — 04 Jan 2015
What is there to say about Inglourious Basterds? All it is is 2 and a half hours of historical inaccuracies, dialogue, violence and subtitles. It's a spaz of a movie with Tarantino's overconfidence permeating thought the whole experience, but his exploitation epic is a unique beast that molests history, wrong-foots expectations and royally entertains.
And that ridiculous script is vintage Tarantino. On one hand you have Brad Pitt collecting Nazi scalps, on the other you have Melanie Laurent secretly plotting as she lives amongst those who slaughtered her whole family, and then you have Chrisoph Waltz; the Nazi lovechild of Sherlock Holmes and the Terminator.
Inglourious Basterds is calculated, cinematic, flat-out bonkers and has no intrinsic purpose except honing your attention to what a brilliant film this is on a technical level. Yes, behind all the ballistics belies one of the most honed experiences ever presented on the silver screen.
Those extended takes.... those glorious extended takes! Inglorious Basters is both balmy and brilliant in equal measure, as well as a landmark in unfiltered cinema. Theatrically absurd, but masterful moviemaking.
If not the whole movie, watch the tavern scene. GENIUS.
