Why Hollywood why? Leave it to Hollywood to change the books ending in the worst possible way. The virus was not going to kill half of the world's population - instead it sterilized 2/3. Better outcome for the world but this also meant that the hero was unable to stop the "madman" which in Hollywood is not possible.
Ugh, you should have stuck with the correct ending.
