Review of Infernal Affairs (2002) by Andy A — 01 Mar 2009
If only I had seen this prior to the remake. Only then would I be able to make an honest-to-God even-handed assessment of this great movie. Obviously Monahan took the script almost word-for-word, action-for-action, but something in the original inspires in the viewer a feeling that the American version does not.
As opposed to the often ugly and cynical world that the characters in Scorsese's films often occupy, Lau and Fai Mak render this tale of crime with a certain sentimentality that is noticeably absent in the filmic translation.
Whether the movie is better or worse for it is up for debate but altogether it never ceases to entertain, even if you know what's coming.
