Review of Infernal Affairs (2002) by Nathaniel B — 22 Jun 2012
Though I prefer The Departed, this film holds up brilliantly on its own, and is just as interesting and engrossing as Martin Scorsese's version. What surprised me the most was just how identical it was to the American crime film it inspired.
Down to the scenes, lines, and cinematography, The Departed recreated almost every aspect of this intelligent and exciting Hong Kong thriller. Although a recognizable difference is the stereotypical Americanization of the story.
In Infernal Affairs, there is no sex whatsoever. In The Departed, there is no shortage. In Infernal Affairs, there is no swearing. The Departed has some of the most prolific swearing I have ever heard.
There is actually very little actual violence and not that much blood in Infernal Affairs, while in The Departed, blood spatters on walls, streets, and faces, and when people are shot it's like piercing a water balloon, of blood that is.
Anyway, both films are genius and each has its perks and originalities that make it a fantastic and fun film to watch. This one is just one more example of how brilliant Hong Kong crime films are, and I am eager to find all the best, and watch them ASAP.
