Review of Indignation (2016) by Steve W — 13 Aug 2016
Indignation refers to the dislike of the society that is pretty much unchanged in some ways. Its 1951, and a mild mannered and studious jewish teen named Marcus Messner goes to Winesberg College to escape the draft and the Korean war.
While working in the library and keeping to himself, he meets a beautiful but complex woman named Olivia Hutton. But the world won't allow these two to be together, due to all the societal upheaval at the time.
Its a simple slow moving drama, but it has some amazing performances that are just captured. Logan Lerman shows some real range, Sarah Gadon is incredible as always, and the person who really shined was Tracy Letts as the understated Dean.
Indignation has themes of racism, puritanism, and a whole myriad other thins lurking beneath its shiny surface.
