Review of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) by Tatsuhito K — 11 Jun 2015
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is not for the faint of heart. It's a first-rate popcorn entertainment from the start to finish, despite the fact it takes a rather darker approach to its story and has the kind of shiver-inducing, gleefully peculiar humor that Tim Burton loves.
Spielberg's direction is brilliant as always and Harrison Ford is great as Indiana Jones. I know this franchise is not so much about the narrative, but the plot of this film in particular is very weak and nonsensical, and it has a very annoying heroine who you don't care too much about (partly because Karen Allen was such a likable screen presence in Raiders and Kate Capshaw isn't).
Some of the action looks fake and staged; it lacks the sense of thrill the previous film had. But nevertheless, those who enjoyed Raiders will have a fun time watching this film. Afterall, it is an Indiana Jones movie.
It is good fun.
