Review of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) by Jonathan B — 11 Oct 2012
Last Crusade is one of, if not the, most watched films of my entire life, so needless to say I am quite passionate about it and find it never gets old. It plays like the brother to Raiders, sharing a lot of similar beats and tones, but it's the presence of Sean Connery that allows it to stand apart.
The father-son relationship becomes the heart and soul of the story, really bringing Indy down to earth and human in a way the other three simply can't match. Connery and Harrison Ford's relationship is an absolute beauty to watch unfold, a pairing made in movie heaven.
Spielberg takes full advantage by infusing a seemingly endless amount of humor and quotable lines, not to mention several amazing action sequences, so that it's basically a nonstop joy ride. Throw in the quest for the Grail and the larger than life questions that raises, and you have one of my favorite films of all time, one in which I have never stopped going back to from my childhood and am continually amazed by.
