Review of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) by James S — 04 May 2014
A rare case of a third film being the best in the series. The filmmakers here took great care not to repeat the mistakes of Temple, and reinforced everything you loved about Raiders: swashbuckling action, comedy, interesting characters, and a gripping plot.
This time, Indy teams up with his father (played very well by Sean Connery). The relationship between the two is multi-layered and nuanced; although they work in the same field, they have different approaches, and yet are quite capable of working together. Alongside the Jones boys, we have Marcus Brody (played as a funny man by Denholm Elliott) and Dr. Elsa Schneider (played OK by Alison Doody). John Rhys-Davis returns as Sallah, and they are opposed by Walter Donovan (played with good depth of character by Walter Donovan).
The plot is both action-packed and generous with comedy; it feels very natural, and the scenes progress well with each other. There are twists, deeply fleshed-out characters, and a very satisfying finale.
The best entry in the series, and very much worth a watch.
