Review of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) by Loki S — 05 Aug 2014
The biggest problem that faces filmmakers is making a trilogy that ends with the best film. I mean really, can you think of any film trilogies where the third film is the best? Very few, right? Well, here is one right in front of you. "The Last Crusade" is (at least in my opinion) the best of the Indiana Jones films, even topping the original "Raiders".
The reason this film is so great is because it feels a lot like "Raiders" and avoids the mistakes of "The Temple of Doom". The Nazis are once again the villains - like "Raiders" - but the film keeps it fresh and doesn't feel like a repeat. Also, the introduction of Sean Connery as Henry Jones, Sr. was a huge addition to the cast. How great is it that they snagged Sean Connery?! Harrison Ford and Sean Connery have great back-and-forth banter throughout the film. This creates a lot of outstanding comedy, without taking away from the action.
Even though "The Last Crusade" doesn't have that new Indy smell, Indy still kicks butt. This film is a great conclusion for several reasons: it is fun, thrilling, and exciting; it has a great balance of comedy and action; and it gets back to the roots of what made "Raiders" great. And so, as Indy rides off into the sunset, I feel this is the perfect ending for the series, and I'm glad the Indiana Jones series ends on a high note. Oh wait...
