Review of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) by Eero V — 30 Jun 2014
While Raiders of the Lost Ark is always the first film that comes to mind when talking about Indiana Jones, to me the best entry of the series is absolutely The Last Crusade. While Raiders succumbed to slight repetition and elongation during its second half, The Last Crusade is pure, gripping fun from start to finish.
The action scenes are typically thrilling and well shot, and are not as over-the-top as in Temple of Doom, the film offers loads and loads of great laughs, and Harrison Ford and Sean Connery have some of the best chemistry ever seen in film.
Connery is only 12 years older than Ford, but both manage to convince the viewer they are real father and son, and though the film is often at its funniest when they're playing off each other, their relationship is also emotional and quite touching, without ever being sentimental.
There is also fine support from Julian Glover and Allison Doody. It is really hard to find anything negative to say about this. The Last Crusade is one of Steven Spielberg's finest achievements, and quite possibly the best adventure film of all time.
