Review of Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) by David M — 18 Sep 2016
Independence Day is iconically remembered for being a part of a small number of movies that brought gripping tension, depth & cutting-edge technology to the usually laughable disaster flick genre. However this sequel is definitely going down as one of 2016's biggest disappointments.
I don't even know where to start, but I'll certainly say I regret wasting big $ to see this on the big screen. Another lazy cash-grab sequel, that I'll admit fooled me. This movie is proof the phrase "bigger is always better" is sometimes completely wrong.
I'm no NASA scientist, but that alien-ship that "lands" on earth was gargantuan. Like, stupidly big! I think the CGI team got the scale wrong, because anything that gigantic landing on our planet would send us off orbit or crack the bloody planet to pieces.
But anyway even if you can look past that, they brought every character conveniently back excluding Will Smith (really?!), there was nothing compelling in terms of character development or drama, it was cheesy & cringe worthy (not in the good way) and just basically didn't compare to the 1996 surprise cult classic whatsoever.
I give it 1 star purely for outstanding special effects. Absolutely nothing else.
