Review of Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) by Kyle M — 24 May 2018
I understand much of the critics reviews, and even a large majority of the audience reviews are negative, and for good reason, as this film does take quite a many hits throughout, not really living up to the original film (shocker, it's a sequel), but it does live up to it's own standards as far as sci-fi movies go.
The original film as stated by others here, wasn't really ever a "smart" or "thought-provoking" film, but rather a summer blockbuster with lots of action and clever one liners, so in that regard, resurgence does follow suit to it's counterpart.
It was great to see Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman make their returns in this film, however, Will Smith's absence from this film is noticeable. Many of the plot sequences have holes, and parts that just don't seem to fit in this film, such as (SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!! DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU DO NOT WANT SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!)----------------------------------------------------> the giant alien running a muck in the desert, but many other parts are quite interesting and cool, just as the fact that the film takes place in the same timeline as present day, with the 20 years between the first film and this one being the same timeline within the film, and the fact that after defeating the original alien onslaught in the first film, humans reverse engineered the technology and created really neat new gadgets, weapons and vehicles.
This film is wortth watching, if at the minimum for the major fans of the first film, but it's a double edged sword that will either have you nodding throughout, or completely disgusted by the changes.
For me, it's worth at least 4 stars.
