Review of Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) by Captain_Chaos — 11 Jul 2016
The main negative thing I can say about this movie is it's shallow female stereotypes. They killed one, tried to kill another, and I'm not sure what the Chinese woman's role was beyond eye candy, and being hit on by the unlikable nerd stereotype. They could have easily made her the protagonist instead of hemswhite boy.
That being said, I loved this movie. They went out of their way to higher back almost every surviving character's actor from the original film: the first R rated film I ever watched and still one of my favorite action films. If you can get by the male-dominated cast, and admittedly some people wouldn't, this film is incredible, and a cut above other recent action films. The acting is great, the special effects are amazing, and it manages to recapture the feel of 90s action/disaster films with just the right amount of dark humor. The additional layer of plot provided by the mysterious sphere really made this movie for me, reminding me very strongly of the Traveler from Destiny.
