Review of Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) by Reese J — 09 Nov 2016
Fucking awful. I enjoyed some elements, like the integration of the alien technology, and the utopian society that unified governments around the world was a very nice set-up. However, I was constantly reminded of the original film by characters using famous lines, scenes, and tropes from the previous film.
I loved Will Smith's cameo as a CGI painting, as the director's way of saying "he wouldn't come back, so we killed him on a separate mission that took place in between films." The story and its pedestrian, formulaic execution is identical to its predecessor, right down to Bill Pullman's inspirational speech in the final act.
