How does a movie like this get so popular? The answer is easy. It stars Will Smith, and is loaded with fancy CGI. The fact that it's so heavy on the special effects is what ruins the action for me.
Let me level with you on why this is an overrated mess. I already mentioned the ruined action and the special effects madness. But the movie especially suffers due to the ridiculously bad characters, and the very tired plot concept, which is stolen from every famous sci-fi invasion film, including Aliens.
Finally, the choice of title itself bugs me. Why call it Independence Day, when it has nothing to do with the 4th of July? I will admit one thing, if the hero weren't played by Will Smith, it would have sucked even harder.
