Review of Independence Day (1996) by Hardy C — 10 Jul 2016
One of my all time favorite movies. I write this review 20 years after its release, partly in response to its horrible sequel in 2016. Everything that went right in the 1996 version went wrong 20 years later.
The original had a wonderful musical score, tight script and direction, appealing characters, believable dialogue, devoid of cliches, exciting battle scenes and exquisite balance of tension and drama.
Emmerich was on top of his game in 96 and produced a sci fi action classic, worthy of its blockbuster status. It is one of only two movies that I have ever seen at the theater more than twice. Conversely, halfway through the 2016 sequel I felt like walking out.
