Review of Incredibles 2 (2018) by Jonathan M — 21 Jun 2018
By no means Pixar's worst movie, but not their best either; it sits at around average for the studio's standards. Of course, taking into consideration that the first Incredibles is widely regarded as Pixar's best production yet, the sequel has quite a lot of ground to cover, and it unfortunately doesn't quite make the whole distance.
Among the qualities that made the first movie remarkable was how skilfully it told a deep and complex story using simple and relatable themes. I had a blast unraveling each layer of the story over the next several years after watching it. The Incredibles 2 makes a token effort to use the same kind of narrative techniques, but the difference in quality really stands out. it feels as though the movie instead puts more focus on its gimmicks such as Jack-Jack and Frozone; Gimmicks that made the first movie popular, but not what made it great.
So while The Incredibles 2 only measures up to an average Pixar movie, I must admit that an average movie coming from Pixar's standards is a top-notch production by anyone else's. Still though, It comes as a disappointment to mature fans of the original movie.
