Review of Incredibles 2 (2018) by Alex G — 03 Jul 2018
Sure, the animation looks great and the action is well executed for the most part. The story and characters though are a mess. So many characters are featured but have nothing to say or do the entire move--what is Dash's story in this movie? What do Frozone, Edna or any of the new supers actually add to the story? What makes Violet's story more than just a crush/date gone south? The movie is full of forced set ups for sloppy pay offs--like the incredible car.
Why don't the kids say anything about their mom being the most popular person in the world? Why doesn't the dad ever see or bring over his best friend? How dumb can a villain's plan be: I want to legalize supers so I can make them even more illegal? And I could easily forgive all of this IF the story here mattered, but it doesn't.
Elastigirl's journey ultimately teaches her nothing about herself and teaches us nothing about the world. Mr. Incredible's journey has moments, but also goes nowhere. We end the movie exactly where we ended the first, except I guess they are legal now--but no growth or change has taken place for our characters.
A huge disappointment.
