Review of Incredibles 2 (2018) by John M — 01 Jul 2018
It's about time. So we have finally gotten to the further adventures of everyone's favorite superhero family. Public opinion of supers is at a low, and they've become outlawed from society.
Some powerful people want to change that back, and they want Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) to be the face of the movement. This leaves Mr. Incredible to pick up the slack at home tending to the kids. I really don't know why this movie took so long to be produced.
To give a little perspective, Pixar has released five sequels (counting the prequel Monsters University) since the original Incredibles back in 2004. Out of their entire library, this is the one that makes the most sense to have a sequel, especially when you consider the superhero boom earlier this decade.
But Pixar has now rewarded your patience, and this is a movie you're certainly going to have a blast with. Right from the beginning of this, you slide right back into the story like the previous movie was released last year.
There is plenty for everyone to do, and these characters have learned from their mistakes last movie and continue to grow. Even little Jack-Jack is coming into his own with his powers, and whenever he is onscreen, you're just waiting for the next thing that he is going to do, and it is always innovative and creative.
I like how the story flips the script with the role reversal, it is simple and effective and it really manages to progress the arcs of both of the parents. There is also character motivation; you don't always get that in live action dramas, and it really is a testament to why Pixar is considered to be in a class of their own.
I don't want to spoil specifics of the plot because a lot of the enjoyment is going on this journey with this family that you love. I know some people have criticized this movie for having a safe story and not taking risks, but that really didn't bother me; even though this is on the straightforward side, I was into the movie from start to finish.
I will say that the more you like the first movie, the more you're going to like this, and I'm really having a difficult time imagining somebody walking out of this upset.
