Review of Incident at Loch Ness (2004) by Lita R — 05 Jul 2007
Extremely well-conceived. Though it would be silly to say that Herzog doesn't usually specialize in "fake" or "real" stories--I think he'd argue there's no such distinction--this mockumentary is deeply satisfying precisely because, for a great portion of the film, it seems truer than film can be.
It's not just a documentary, it's a documentary about Hollywood filmmaking, where the viewer is thrown into the trenches of the knock-down drag-out process himself. When the ruse is finally up, the lingering commentary on both people who believe in monsters and people who believe in conventional cinema is, actually, just as piercing as Herzog's observations in his "true" documentary work.
