Review of Incident at Loch Ness (2004) by Becky J — 15 May 2008
When I first heard of this movie, I thought it was a weird pairing of Werner Herzog and Zak Penn, but for the purpose of this mockumentary it works very well. I think Zak Penn should stay away from writing crap blockbuster movies like Behind Enemy Lines, and write more of this stuff (though I guess the blockbusters are what sells).
He's got a very good ear for dialogue and is not afraid of playing himself off as a conniving, sleazy, liar. Werner Herzog is also great. I think people think he's either just this really serious filmmaker who could never crack a joke or they think he's this dictator director who makes his crew lift a large boat over a mountain.
I think his performance works very well in a comic sense. The film is so ridiculous that it competes with Christopher Guest's mockumentaries. Which is the highest compliment you can make. On the dvd, the commentary is just as hilarious.
It consists of Zak Penn trying to find someone from the crew or anyone of the street who will do a commentary with and make him look good, to which he is never successful.
