Review of Inception (2010) by Andre W — 07 Jul 2014
A stunning piece of film making, the best film I've seen since (500) Days of Summer. Kudos to Nolan for making this ambitious, thought provoking film. I can't remember the last film that challenged me like this in a long time. It's refreshing to see someone trying something like this instead of the next lame rom com or Saw 10.
Inception is many things. It's a relentless thriller that keeps you on the edge, it's an ever expanding puzzle that keeps you engaged (you can't afford to mentally check out), it's a doomed, heart-breaking, love story, it's a pulsating action film and the very definition of a concept film. During the dream scenes I felt like I was watching the Matrix, amid the action I was reminded of The Bourne Trilogy and the scenes with Mal seemed right out of Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind. It seems Nolan has paid homage to a number of films and simultaneously created a his own, vividly inventive masterwork.
I'm sure they're are significant faults with this film, but at first glance I can't think of too many. The story is so rich, complex and thought provoking. The dialog is expertly crafted and delivered. The cast is probably the best ensemble I've seen recently (everyone was excellent, there isn't a lame duck performance to be found here); all gave strong performances. The special effects are beyond visionary. The musical score is simply incredible and perfectly captures the gravity of the film (no one does this better than Hans Zimmer). The action sequences are very well put together and some of the best I've seen since the Bourne films. It seems this role was made perfectly for DiCaprio, because he shines in and brings it to life.
You know you've seen a great film when you and your friends spend time after trying to break it all down. This is a must see and one I need to see again in the theater.
