Review of Inception (2010) by Lasse G — 28 Mar 2016
A solid entry to Nolan's filmography that lives up to its hype and acclaim, though it's not exactly groundbreaking or even his best work to date.
The cast perform well, with strong performances all round but they could have been given better characters to work with- Page's Ariadne in particular felt like a pretty by-the-book role, with just about all of the juicy stuff going to Leo.
Plot-wise, i'd say it's top-notch for the action film genre and the addition of a solid philosophical grounding to go with all of the running and shooting certainly makes the film stand out.
However, I was left feeling somewhat bored by said running and shooting (and driving, I suppose)- I found myself far more interested in the ins and outs of the premise than in the actual events that occur throughout most of the film. It feels as if Nolan was constrained by the genre here and wasn't able to delve into some of the themes with as much depth as he could have had he not been working on a Hollywood Blockbuster.
Nonetheless, this is a well-crafted and entertaining film, even if it doesn't quite achieve what it might have set out to. It certainly doesn't fail in this regard either though, as its brilliantly-delivered end sequence shows.
