The critics above said it's messy. The civil war was messy. War is messy in general. A clear cut organized movie would not have conveyed that. You were meant to feel the messiness, it was a part of the civil war psyche.
It's overlong because the journey was long, you are meant to feel that too. Today's audience is impatient just wants to get to that point. Wars never get to the point, this movie would have failed had it jumped to the point.
