Review of Incendies (2010) by Mildo . — 11 Jul 2011

I can't believe what I just saw today! I can't believe that this is such a great film. Overall, "Incendies", is a true beauty, in or out of the film itself. We follow these two twins, Jeanne and Simon, on their journey to find their father and brother, as their mother told them to bring them letters from her. As thinking of that plot, you know what to expect, but I was surprised by the dialogues and the performances of the actors are all brilliant. Each piece of their quest to find their loved ones that they had never encountered, is such terrific, it's like there is something a secret that goes revealed about where are those people that they are looking for, and also a secret from their mom, which is also told well in flashbacks, and at least it works! There is also an issue in this film about religion, in which the twins mom married a Muslim, so meaning Jeanne or Simon must believe in God or maybe to be a monotheist. And the ending of this film, is I think the most shocking and very unbelievable conclusion I've ever seen in many films I saw lately, which is I'm not gonna tell because, SPOILERS!

As I think again "Incendies", I always think that this two twins doesn't know anything about the history of their family and also some secrets that I think their mother wanted to tell to them but instead it became two letters to fetch from you know who. This is as well a movie that makes its characters thinking rather than knowing what to happen next, that's like a predictable thing to consider.

So, I just found that this film was nominated in the last Academy Awards for best foreign language film, and I gotta this was lost to that film called "In a Better World", and bad news again, this film deserves to win. It has a lot of potential and energy that makes the film very unique and rather beautiful. This is a masterpiece, and one of the best films of the decade of 2010's SO FAR! And trust me, no matter what film you're gonna watch, this will never forgot or copied by someone else by it's theme and gorgeous on filmmaking.

Lastly, the meaning of the word Incendies, comes from a French word meaning to destroy by fire. And I don't know, does fire relate to this film, maybe not? Maybe it could have been titled, .....!
