Review of Incendies (2010) by Ceph J — 05 Dec 2011
There are a few movies with endings that are so powerful, they make you think repeatedly that you want to view the movie again. For e.g., the embalmed mother in "Psycho" or the resolution in "The Vanishing.
" Add "Incendies" to this list. A very intelligent, well-crafted thriller with gripping dramatic scenes. Movie starts off routine, we see several images before a fat man (Remy Girard) reads a dead woman's (Lubna Azabal in an excellent performance) will to her surviving twins (Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin & Maxim Gaudette).
About an hour in the movie, we sense it's more than a search for missing relatives. We're caught up in a Middle Eastern country with religious violence including assassinations, rape, death, torture and human dignity.
The movie is culled from the headlines and though the search seems arbitrary and melodramatic, the end shows us that war literally divides families...permanently.
