Review of Incendies (2010) by Mike H — 16 Feb 2012
A powerful movie that charts various currents of Lebanese history with the action taking place at the height of the conflict and during the still tense present day. Canadian siblings of Lebanese decent head for their motherâ(TM)s homeland to discover their past.
The role of Christian phalangists in the story is up front â" and this is welcome given that many see the recent history of the Levant in pure Arab v Israeli terms. Itâ(TM)s a movie that pulls no punches when it comes to atrocity although much is depicted off screen â" that makes it no less powerful than a film like Drive which is far more graphic.
The conclusion does rely pretty heavily on coincidences and that would be the only quibble â" deserves to be far more widely seen.
