Review of In Which We Serve (1942) by Daniel K — 07 Oct 2008
It's a great example of a Navy film. It's not the best, this probably falls to Ford, but Lean does an admirable job here. Coward was smart enough to leave at least some of it to him and more so in later pictures.
I doubt the occasional heavy handedness is due to Lean, but there are more than enough good scenes to make up for it. WWII propaganda pieces are not usually this good. It was definitely made even more potent by the fact that my base was taking incoming fire while the men on the ship were themselves being fired upon in the film.
