Review of In the Valley of Elah (2007) by Dg C — 04 Nov 2008
I love the way this film was presented... stark, cold, distant, real... you don't need fancy window dressing to set up and deliver an effective drama. The murder mystery was surprising yet effective, although I figured it out 40 minutes before Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron did.
The acting is first rate all-around, although it could be argued that many top actors were underused (Sarandon, Patric, Franco) in their minor roles. Overall, I think the movie struck a wonderful balance and while Jones stood out more in "No Country", I am happy he received a nomination for his solemn, understated work here.
Not an easy film to watch, but one not to miss.
