Review of In the Valley of Elah (2007) by Michael T — 25 Oct 2008
I wanted to see this when it came out, but I missed it. I'm watching int now and it is brilliant. I think it didn't do well in the box office because of Iraq war fatigue, but it is a really great movie independent of politics.
Most of the film is really just a "who done it," a man against the establishment. The indictment of conditions in Iraq comes pretty far into the film, actually. Tommy Lee Jones gives and incredible performance, remarkably restrained and nuanced.
Charlize Theron once again turns in an incredibly convincing and amazing performance. Indeed, there is no one in the cast who doesn't turn in a convincing performance. Susan Sarandon has a brief turn on screen, but it is gut wrenching.
Paul Haggis is a wonderful director, and this is a powerful film.
