Review of In the Valley of Elah (2007) by Brian J — 17 Nov 2008
Tommy Lee Jones is solid as always, but the actor that stands out is Charlize Theron. It's amazing how she can play basically any role with a depth of conviction and intensity that makes every character eminently believable. I never find myself thinking "that's Charlize Theron" but instead am simply engaging the character. Brilliant.
Anyway, the movie. Smart, interesting, and developed. The "Valley of Elah" theme isn't introduced until half-way through the movie, but it still manages to provide a beautiful backdrop to a story about brokenness. In this sense "In the Valley..." is able to compellingly weave divergent themes into an eminently watchable and solid film.
