Review of In the Valley of Elah (2007) by Peter B — 20 Jun 2010
Tommy lee jones is fantastic and completely carries the film with the kind of quietly intense role that you just cant look away from. Theron is a bit odd - she plays someone really annoyed all the time and its a bit of a bore seein her constantly huffin and puffin, sighin and whining.
She gets better near the end tho. The story would keep you much more interested in its mid section if it were say half an hr shorter, made tighter and swifter-at two hours its a bit rambly. Its mostly real good though and whenever lee jones gets some emotional scenes it really grabs your interest.
Come the powerful conclusion tho you are left with much to think about and the feeling that - even tho it dips a bit - youve just seen a film that really has a desire to say something. It certainly does and it certainly does.
