Review of In the Valley of Elah (2007) by Paul P — 14 Aug 2010
After the heavy handed sucker punch that was Crash, Haggis approaches storytelling with a little more suibtlety...
The story is fairly simple and is quite compelling at times, however there are some parts of the film that are so cliched (mainly the way that Charlze Theron's faceless colleagues treat her) that it became pretty annoying to watch whenever they turned up on screen.
I liked Tommy Lee's work here. His work of late has shown a more dignified aspect to his persona and this is a good thing in my book. Charlize is also reliably solid, and makes the most of what is really a paper thin role.
Better than Crash, the cast make this more than it should be.
