It is difficult to review this movie without spoiling it for the viewer, but it is very important to say that this is not a crime story or an action movie. If you decide to watch this movie, prepare yourself for deliberate and sometimes very painful study of certain aspects of participating in a war and coping with the after-effects.
With the superb cast, a director that apparently prefers the understatements and takes his time to weave the story, this is a bittersweet treasure that needs to be savored, 'cause they don't make them like that very often these days.
If it wasn't for the rather forced and unnecessary political message tucked on at the end of the movie, I could very well have said that 'In the Valley of Elah' may very well be the 'Deer Hunter' of Iraq/Afghanistan-generation.
Yes, it is that good.
