Review of In the Valley of Elah (2007) by Esteban G — 28 Dec 2011
Paul Haggis, screenwriter for Crash and Million Dollar Baby, delivers another great film which in my opinion was overlooked at the Oscars perhaps because it was ahead of its time and the war in Iraq is still resonating to this day.
I thought this film was very similar to The Deer Hunter in that the message was about the influence that the war has on the soldiers and how it can change character and morals. In my opinion the message of the film is very transparent, raw, and real.
The ending where Tommy Lee Jones raises the flag backwards after the speech he had given earlier on in the film about what it meant is very revealing. Tommy Lee Jones is great in this film. I enjoyed the film from beginning to end as we are searching for the truth behind the disappearance of an American soldier who has returned from Iraq.
Great film!
