Review of In the Realm of the Senses (1976) by Ken D — 20 Sep 2007
Gave this a wide berth when it came out - it got bad press for being a smutty movie and the length of the run on Hong Kong's seedier movie houses seemed to confirm that.
Got it on DVD of a friend and watched it. This is NOT a smutty movie! Yes, it is explicit, yes it is daring and pushes the boundaries of what could be considered porn even today, but what this movie brings to the watcher is fear. Fear of consequences, fear of banality, fear of experimentation, fear of crazy women with sharp objects!
A disturbing study of what the darker recesses of the libido could lead us into. Much more a comment perhaps on the awakening sexual consciousness of Japan in the '70s than a bit of titillation.
This introduced us to a 'bunny boiler' long before, a decade later, Glenn Close sent the living willies up every bloke who was cheating on his wife!
