Review of In the Realm of the Senses (1976) by Vincent O — 13 Nov 2008
An intense Japanese sex saga that manages to break all the rules, whilst smashing most taboos, in moral acceptability. Directed with such utter conviction it never once flinches (or skirts around) the sometimes hardcore material on offer and a super rare example of how a movie can be so thought provoking, shocking and yet delightfully exquisite all at once; especially if you consider the impact this must have had on an unsuspecting, western audience (in the mid seventies).
A groundbreaking picture in every sense and essential viewing to anyone slightly interested in cinema censorship, controversy, or for that matter in the the history of motion picture itself. Quite the masterpiece!
