Review of In the Realm of the Senses (1976) by Firas M — 16 Nov 2008
Intense is an understatement. I was never so uncomfortable in a theater as much as I was watching this. Shocking, funny and unsettling. So many emotions are stirred watching this yet it still manages to be thought provoking.
A film that has yet to be available in Japan and one that even shocked the West when it screened. Oshima's rejection of limitations takes everything sexual to the unflinching extremities and then some.
Groundbreaking and challenging, should not be watched by the feint of heart and a must watch for open minded film lovers. Im surprised its even gotten an NC-17. Or perhaps that's the edited DVD version?
