Review of In the Realm of the Senses (1976) by Eric R — 05 May 2009
Nagisa Oshima really must have blown people's minds when this film came out in 1976. This film really is a brilliant critique of sexual obsession and the correlation between it and love. Yes, there is lots of nudity and explicit material, but goddamn its beautifully done.
I think Oshima fills the film with excess eroticism as a way of making the audience numb. We just watch these characters and their sexual obsession and the destruction that it causes. I do prefer Blind Beast which has similar issues and Death By Hanging is still my favorite Oshima to date.
